Health Ministry provides free diagnostic and treatment services for 2,600 Multiple Sclerosis patients in Syria
World Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Day is an annual event organized by the MS International Foundation (MSIF) on May 30. The day focuses on raising awareness about the disease and on trying to connect the 2.3 million people living with the condition worldwide.
According to the Head of the Chronic Disease Department at the Syrian Health Ministry, Dr. Rania Shiffeh, the World Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Day is an occasion to highlight the healthy lifestyle and psychological and moral support needed by the person to control the symptoms of the disease and live with it.
She said that the ministry provides free treatment for some 2600 MS patients in six medical centers in Damascus, Aleppo, Homs, Hama, Lattakia and Tartous. Treatment steps includes diagnosis, following up and treatment services in accordance with unified medical treatment protocols.
Dr. Shiffeh added that all the data relating to the MS patients are computerized, noting that the rate of the disease in Syria is acceptable compared to global rates.
She made it clear that the spread of Coronavirus pandemic in the world carries more danger to patients with chronic diseases and it increases the severity of the pandemic symptoms on MS patients. Therefore, the ministry’s Chronic Disease Department published brochures and awareness messages for chronic diseases patients, including those with sclerosis because of their weak immunity against coronavirus.
