Al-Jaafari: UN instruments should be reactivated away from politicization and double standard policies

NEW YORK, (ST)- Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dr. Bashar Al-Jaafari, has affirmed that the UN instruments for maintaining international peace and security should be reactivated away from politicization and double standard policies and in accordance with the rules of the UN Charter.

He made the remarks during an unofficial UN General Assembly’s consultation session on Friday dedicated to discuss the International Declaration Draft marking  the UN’s 75th  Foundation Anniversary.

Al-Jaafari reiterated the need to adhere to the UN main principles, foremost of which are maintaining equal rights, sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity of all nations and people’s right to self determination. He pointed out that commemorating the UN foundation anniversary is an opportunity to reactivate the instruments of UN action in order to confront inequality and selectivity, to prevent armed conflicts, to combat terrorism as well as climate change and epidemics, which are the most recent challenges facing our world.

The senior Syrian diplomat went to say that the reform efforts that take place within the framework of the United Nations and its various bodies must be subject to the provisions of the Charter and within clear mandates specified by member states. He made it clear that these reforms  must not be subject to initiatives launched by the UN General Secretariat without assignment or coordination with the governments of member states.

He expressed Syria’s support for the slogan “no one is left behind” as regards to sustainable development goals, especially for developing countries and the least developed countries.

Al-Jaafari stressed that peoples of the world today are aspiring that the governments of the member states exercise the utmost responsibility in achieving global collective solidarity in the face of the Coronavirus pandemic and in ensuring commitment to the real spirit of the efforts that led to the UN foundation. He pointed out that achieving these factors can eliminate challenges and maintain collective diplomatic action diplomacy that rejects populism, protectionism, narrow interests and unilateral actions that violate the most important principles of the UN Charter, which is global solidarity.
