New York (ST) Syria’s permanent representative to the UN Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari   said that Syria reiterated calls for putting an unconditional end to the economic unilateral, coercive measures being  imposed on the country, particularly in light of the spread of Corona-virus pandemic, stressing that confronting this pandemic requires international solidarity.

During a virtual meeting for the UN General Assembly in the context of the measures taken to confront Corona –virus pandemic, Dr. al-Jaafari said that  all member states theoretically agree that confronting Corona-virus requires an international collective solidarity, but differences which have recently happened inside the General Assembly about the content of draft resolutions have confirmed that the policies and actions of some sides don’t always conform to their obligations or words.

Al-Jaafari reminded the Assembly of the correspondences exchanged between the Syrian government and UN Secretary General who affirmed in his recent reply letter his complete rejection of the unilateral coercive sanctions being imposed on the Syrian people and his keenness to work for lifting these measures imposed on Syrian people and other peoples of the world.

The Syrian envoy stressed that Syria  is  committed to the conventions and rules that govern the work of the UN, with its loyalty to the national interests and the Syrian people’s right to put an end to the economic sanctions imposed on the Syrian people.

Al-Jaafari stressed that Syrian people  are determined to stick to their inalienable rights, which are guaranteed by the international law and conventions and the UN General Assembly’s relevant resolutions to put an end to the unilateral economic measures,  referring  to Syria’s call for the freedom of reaching the international trade and the international banking system to as to ensure the Syrian main demands and surmount the economic, social and health impact of the Corona-virus pandemic.
