WHO representative: The reality of Coronavirus infections in Syria depends on strict adherence to government measures taken

Damascus, (ST) – WHO representative to Syria Dr. Neameh Saed Abd has confirmed that Syria is at the beginning of a rising graph for Coronavirus.

“Increasing or decreasing the number of infections depends mainly on the citizens’ commitment to the procedures taken by the government to confront the virus,” Nemat said in an interview with SANA‘s reporter.

Dr. Saed Abd expressed his optimism about Syria’s ability to confront the virus and prevent its spread in spite of the difficult conditions the country is passing through because of the 10-year war waged on it. He pointed out that the World Health Organization is working towards lifting the coercive measures imposed on Syria that affects the health sector in the country.

He affirmed that the confronting the coronavirus needs the concerted efforts of all governmental and private sectors and civil societybut there is a great role that should be played by citizens to confront the virus.

“Despite all difficulties that Syria has encountered, the health system in the country is strong, but it still needs support as the most powerful health systems in the world suffer now from this epidemic,” Saed Abd added.

Syria until now has registered few number of infections, but it is not possible to separate the situation in the country from coronavirus in the world, Dr. Saed Abd said. He hailed procedures adopted by the Syrian government, mainly suspending schools and universities, and limiting movement in the cities.

The representative of the World Health Organization in Syria stressed that the most important measure to reduce the spread of the virus is the citizens’ commitment to the procedures taken by the government to confront the virus, in addition to keeping the distance between one person and another and washing the  hands with water and soap.

On the cooperation between the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health Dr. Saed Abd said that the first concern focused on strengthening laboratory diagnosis of the virus by providing laboratory supplies.

Dr. Saed Abd added that the focus of the organization’s work includes also providing protection devices for health cadres, describing them as heroes who are at risk in order to serve others.

Dr. Saeed Abdel concluded by stressing the importance of applying the quarantine voluntarily by any person coming from a country that has recorded cases of infection with the virus to ensure himselfand his family’s and community’s safety, the quarantine must take place in a specialized center or at house if this is not possible
