Syrian-Russian deal to restore Palmyra’s Arch of Triumph postponed due to coronavirus

Syria and Russia have postponed signing an agreement on restoring the Arch of Triumph in the historical city of Palmyra because of the precautionary measures adopted by the Syrian government to confront the coronavirus pandemic, according to General Director of Antiquities and Museums (GDAM), Dr. Mahmoud Hammoud.

The first coronavirus case was confirmed in Syria two days ago.

Dr. Hammoud told SANA on Monday that the agreement was scheduled to be signed by a Russian delegation comprising members of the State Duma and a Syrian delegation representing the GDAM. It provides for starting the restoration of the arch of Triumph by Russian specialists and experts. According to the agreement, after the Arch of Triumph, restoration work will be carried out in other archeological monuments that were damaged or destroyed by Daesh terrorist organization between 2015 and 2016.

A new date for the meeting has not been determined, Dr. Hammoud said, pointing out that as soon as the situation in Syria improves, the agreement will be signed.
