Syria, Libya sign MoU on reopening diplomatic missions

DAMASCUS, (ST)- A memorandum of Understanding was signed on Sunday  between the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates and the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on reopening the headquarters of the diplomatic missions of both countries and on coordinating joint stances at regional and international forums to confront the Turkish aggression and interventionist policy in both countries.

 The memo was signed following a meeting in Damascus between Syria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Walid al-Moallem and a Libya official delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Rahman al-Ahiresh and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Abdul Hadi al-Hweij.

Talks during the meeting dealt with means of reactivating bilateral ties and with continuous coordination to face common challenges, particularly the Turkish flagrant aggression on the sovereignty of both countries.

Al-Moallem said that Syria is greatly interested in enhancing relations with Libya given the special relationship that historically linked the two countries. He reiterated that the current circumstances and challenges facing Syria and Libya prove that bilateral ties should now be better than ever so they can face the foreign aspirations, most remarkable of which is the current Turkish aggression on the two countries.

Al-Moallem reviewed developments in the fight against terrorism in Syria, stressing that Syria will continue combating terrorism and struggling until security and stability are restored countrywide and until the foreign occupation forces which violate the Syrian sovereignty and loot the Syrians’ resources, leave.

On his part, the Libyan delegation hailed the progress that Syria has achieved in its war on foreign-backed terrorist groups.

The guest delegation reviewed latest developments in Libya, focusing on the Turkish intervention in Libya’s affairs through sending thousands of mercenaries to the country.

In a statement to journalists after the ceremony of signing the Memo, al-Moallem said he held fruitful talks with the Libyan delegation on coordination to face common challenges, stressing the importance of resuming diplomatic ties between the two countries.

On his part, the Libyan Foreign Minister affirmed that resuming diplomatic and economic relations between the governments and peoples of the two countries is a necessary step for the two sides to enhance cooperation and confront the common challenge embodied in terrorist groups, mercenaries and outlaws as well as in the Turkish intervention.
