Iran ready to cooperate in finding political solution to crisis in Syria

TEHRAN, (ST)- Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif reiterated during a meeting on Saturday with UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen in Tehran that the political solution is the only way to end the crisis in Syria.

“Iran is ready to cooperate and join the efforts that aim at finding a political solution based on respecting Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity,” Zarif said.

On his part, Pedersen reviewed the latest developments in Syria, and means to push the process of finding a political solution in the country forward.

 In the same context, Assistant to Iran’s Foreign Minister for Special Political Affairs Ali Asghar Khaji held a meeting with Pedersen during which he affirmed Iran’s stance that is based on the need to fight terrorism in Syria, protect civilians and prevent terrorists from using civilians as human shields.

Khaji reitetated that Iran is ready to cooperate with the United Nations in order to facilitate reaching a solution to the crisis in Syria.

 Pedersen, on his part, talked about the result of the consultations he has held with the purpose of making progress in the process of finding settlement in Syria.
