Nebenzia: The need to combat terrorist organizations in Idlib that continue to detain civilians and use them as human shields

On January 29, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzia stressed the necessity of combating terrorist organizations in Idlib that continue to detain civilians and use them as human shields and continue to attack the neighboring areas and sites of the Syrian army.

“The terrorists of ‘Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham’and those who support them violate the de-escalation zone agreement and attack the Syrian army and Hmeimim airport, and these issues cannot escape punishment,”Nebinzia said during a session of the UN Security Council.

“Russia supports the measures taken by the Syrian army to get rid of these sources of provocation. Russia also has concerns about the movement of terrorists from Idlib to other regions of Syria and to other countries in the world such as Afghanistan and Libya,” he added.

He warned of the seriousness of the threats made by terrorist organizations regarding the use of chemical weapons in Idlib.

Nebenizia reaffirmed Russia’s consistent position that the Golan is occupied Syrian territory.

“Washington published a document on the Middle East. This document should be considered in depth as we see that it contains a grave geographical mistake. Therefore we would like to remind the geographic experts who draw this map and draw his attention to the fact that we only recognize the Golan as occupied Syrian territory,” Nebenizia said.

In turn, the Chinese Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations stressed the need to preserve Syria’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and not to interfere in its affairs and support the political process based on Syrian leadershipand in accordance with Resolution 2254.

He pointed out the necessity to tackle the file of foreign terrorists in Syria, as they represent a major problem and have many repercussions on other countries, which requires everyone to cooperate in combating terrorism in all its forms in accordance with the relevant resolutions issued by the UN Security Council.

He called for lifting unilateral coercive economic measures imposed on Syria.
