Police uses teargas as dozens in Istanbul protest Turkey’s stance on Syria

Dozens of people have gathered in Istanbul to protest against Turkey’s stance in the ongoing crisis in Syria, according to Russia Today.

The action was incited by explosions last weekend in the city of Reyhanlı, near the border with Syria. The attack killed 52 and injured over a hundred.

On Thursday, two groups of protesters – mainly students – marched from different directions to Beşiktaş municipality in Istanbul where police blocked their path, according to the Hürriyet Daily News. As some protesters tried to cross the barriers and continue their rally, police used water cannon and tear gas. The crackdown follows Wednesday’s clashes in the capital Ankara where hundreds of students took to streets to protest against the government’s stance in the crisis in Syria and policies they believe resulted in the weekend’s bombings. Protesters demanded the resignation of Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and threw stones at police officers.
