Washington’s attempts to legalize its military presence in Syria doomed to failure: Ryabkov

MOSCOW, (ST)-The United States actions in Syria are illegal as they violate the basic rules of UN Charter, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov has stressed, pointing out that all Washington’s attempts to legalize its military presence in the country are doomed to failure.

In a statement to SANA correspondent in Moscow, Ryabkov said “the legitimate government in Damascus didn’t invite the United States to Syria. In addition, the Security Council, the only international party that gives legitimacy to any military action, didn’t adopt any resolution legalizing the US military presence in Syria.”

“In our contacts with the Americans we always inform them about the illegality of their presence in Syria, but unfortunately they stick to the same policy,” the Russian diplomat said, adding that Russian side doesn’t see that such a presence would contribute to attaining stability in Syria, rather, it will exacerbate the crisis in the country.

He expressed hope that the US administration will implement the plan it has announced regarding the US forces withdrawal from the Syrian territories.
