New York, ST- the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, stressed that some countries do not respect the Charter of the International Organization nor the decisions of the Security Council, stressing the need to preserve the provisions of the Charter and the role of the United Nations in order not to meet the fate of the League of Nations.
Guterres pointed out during his meeting last night with the permanent delegate members who spent more than ten years in their work with the United Nations, including Syria’s delegate, Dr. Bashar Al-Jaafari, to the importance of the role of the United Nations and the need to enhance the position of the international organization and enable it to face existing threats.
Guterres also stressed the difficulty of the current situation, because the provisions of the Charter are being subjected to intense pressure in addition to the lack of respect by some countries for the Charter and Security Council resolutions.
Guterres pointed out the importance of what the permanent delegates do in the field of multilateral diplomacy and their work to preserve the provisions of the Charter and that he depends on them in strengthening the role of the United Nations, which this year marks as the seventy-fifth anniversary of its founding, noting that the veteran Ambassadors Club plays a major role in easing tensions between nations and in preserving the role of the United Nations and protecting it from a destiny similar to that of the League of Nations.
For his part, Al-Jaafari made it clear that the events of the new year carry dangerous messages regarding the role and future of the international organization, especially with regard to preserving the provisions of the Charter and the principles of international law, noting that there is a real concern in diplomatic and political circles that serious international events might push the United Nations to fall into the same mistakes of the League of Nations in terms of keeping silent about aggression, occupation and interference in the internal affairs of member states, which requires the Secretary-General to fulfill his responsibilities to protect the provisions of the Charter.
The Veterans Ambassadors Club includes the delegates of Syria, Palestine, Turkmenistan, Cameroon, Congo, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Nauru, Samoa, the former San Marino delegate, the former Albanian delegate , the Hungary delegate, the club president, Katalin Anna Maria Bogyi who gave the mentioned delegates commemorative medals for this occasion.
