Austria Warns EU of Arms Delivery to “Syrian Opposition”

Vienna, (ST) _ In a letter to the EU 26- member states, Austria officially warned of the consequences of weapons delivery to the Syrian opposition fighters.

AFP  quoted the Austrian newspaper (de Presse) in its edition to be issued today (Tuesday)  that Austria considers delivery of weapons to the opponents guerrillas a “threat to international law and the basic laws of the European Union” and as a  ” breach of the UN Charter principles in terms of non-intervention and the use of force ” . It is also a violation of UN Security Council resolutions on al-Qaeda, the Austrian daily said.

The paper noted that among Syrian dissidents are groups such as the (al-Nusra  Front)  which is very close to al-Qaeda terrorist network.

The letter indicated  that any lifting of the embargo on arms delivery will end  overall sanctions, which can only be extended by unanimous consent.

In addition to  Austria ,  Finland, Sweden and the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania)  announced refusal to lift the ban on the supply of arms , and so far the majority of EU countries especially Germany and Spain  refrained from taking any position.
