UNGA renews demand for Israel to comply with UN resolutions on occupied Syrian Golan

NEW YORK, (ST)-The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Friday adopted a resolution titled “Occupied Syrian Golan” in which it renewed its call on the Israeli occupation to comply with the UN resolutions on occupied Syrian Golan, mainly Resolution No. 497 for 1981 which declares that the Israeli decision to annex the occupied Syrian Golan and impose Israeli laws on it is null and void and without international legal effect.

The UNGA’s Fourth Committee- Special Political and Decolonization- adopted this resolution on November 15, 2019.

The UNGA stressed in its resolution that capturing others’ lands by force is not allowed pursuant to international law and the UN Charter. It demanded “Israel”, the occupying power, to stop changing the architectural identity, demographic formation, institutional structure, and legal state of the occupied Syrian Golan and to halt settlement building activities there.

 All the administrative and legislative procedures adopted by the Israeli occupation to change the identity and legal status of the occupied Syrian Golan are null and void and they flagrantly violate the international law and the Geneva Convention of 1949 on protecting civilians during war times and they have no legal effect, according to the UNGA.

It demanded that Israel should stop imposing the Israeli nationality and ID cards on the Syrian citizens in the occupied Syrian Golan and put an end to its  oppressive actions against them.

It called on the UN member states not to recognize any of the illegal procedures adopted by Israel in the occupied Syrian Golan.
