On December 10, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed the necessity of completely liberating the Governorate of Idlib from terrorists, eliminating terrorism in Syria and finding a political solution to the crisis in it, in accordance with UN Resolution 2254.
During a joint press conference with his American counterpart Mike Pompeo, Lavrov said: “ The Syrians alone determine the future of their country.”
Lavrov said his talks with his American counterpart dealt with a wide range of urgent issues, including the situation in the Middle East, combating terrorism and nuclear disarmament on the Korean Peninsula, the renewal of the ‘START’ treaty to reduce nuclear strategic weapons and Russian-American trade cooperation.
Lavrov criticized Washington for not showing the required cooperation with Moscow to resolve international issues.
“The level of relations between Moscow and Washington does not correspond to the interests of the two countries and the world,” Lavrov said. “It is in the interest of the two countries to take advantage of the wide potentials of cooperation and develop their relations for their benefit and the entire international community.”
During a press conference after his meeting with US President Donald Trump, Lavrov reiterated that it is necessary to completely liberate the Idlib governorate from terrorists and return it to the control of the Syrian state.
He said that the so-called “armed opposition” was not separated from the “Jabhat al-Nusra” terrorists in the de-escalation zone in Idlib governorate.
He added that there is no military solution to the crisis in Syria.
Lavrov stressed g the necessity of resuming the political process within the framework of the Constitution Committee, which began its work in Geneva last month.
