Czechs: Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories are illegal

The Republic of Czech reiterated today its position that the Israeli settlements built in the occupied Palestinian territories are illegal.

Czech Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Zozana Stekhova stressed that “the Czech position on the status of these settlements has not changed,” adding that Prague is committed to the UN resolutions and the common position of the European Union.

“The US position on the legality of the Israeli settlements will have no impact on the Czech position”, the Spokeswoman said, adding that Prague respects the international law and UN resolutions.

For his part, Head of the Czech Communist Party Moravi Wojtek Filip described the US position towards the Israeli settlements as “ridiculous”, noting that this position cannot change the UN valid resolutions.

In a press conference a few days ago, the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo renewed the United States blatant bias to the entity of the Israeli occupation, as he announced that the US administration does not consider the Israeli settlements contradictory to the international law. This announcement disregards all international resolutions, especially the UN Security Council resolution No. 2334 of 2016, which calls on the occupation to immediately halt all settlement operations in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Following the announcement, the EU said it “still believes that Israeli settlement in the occupied Palestinian territories is illegal according to the international law”.
