TEHRAN, (ST)- Syria’s Minister of Electricity Mohammad Zuheir Kharboutli and the Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian on Saturday signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the development of the electricity system in Syria as well as on the localization of technology and electric equipment industry in the country.

The memo also provides for establishing power plants as well as electricity transmission and distribution substations in Syria and for rebuilding electric networks.

According to the memo, the two sides will carry out joint investments in the field of electric power and will exchange technical information on building power and renewable energy plants and on upgrading the efficiency of the electric system.

The memo includes a plan to establish the trilateral electric grid between Syria, Iran and Iraq through a partnership that makes the studies and necessary technical preparations necessary for this purpose.

Following the signing ceremony, the two ministers affirmed determination to implement the memo as soon as possible in order to restore the electricity system in Syria to its pre-crisis situation and to achieve electricity self- sufficiency.
