Rouhani, Putin discuss bilateral issues, the situation in Syria

Yerevan, ST- Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani discussed the situation in Syria and the nuclear agreement with Iran during their meeting in the Armenian capital Yerevan on the sidelines of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council meeting.

Putin indicated that the meeting provided an opportunity for continuing talks between the two sides “on bilateral issues and the comprehensive joint work plan, and the nuclear deal as well as the situation in the region including the situation in the Syria.”

“We meet and we work with each other regularly , and due to the dynamics  of the situation in the region and our bilateral relations, we always have many issues to talk about and to discuss.

Putin hailed Iran’s membership at the Eurasian Council, affirming that it serves the interests of the two countries and comes in line with the basic principles of the international law and the provisions of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

In his turn, the Iranian President indicated that the relations between the two countries have reached “an unprecedented level of frankness and openness.”

“The success of the nuclear agreement depends on the full and consistent implementation of the obligations of all signatories and their support to it,” Rouhani said, stressing that Moscow plays an important role in implementing the provisions of the agreement.

The Iranian president pointed out that maintaining peace and stability in the region, especially in the Gulf region, and securing maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is part of the initial policies of his country, stressing again that security and sustainable peace in the Gulf, the Sea of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz are based on the participation of the countries of this region.

The summit of the leaders of the states of the Eurasian Union Council started in Yerevan yesterday, the members of the union are: Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia.
