Cairo Calls for Accountability for Governments Supporting Terrorism in Syria

NEW YORK, (ST)- Egypt has renewed its call for accountability for the governments and parties supporting terrorism in Syria.

During a Security Council session on the situation in Syria, the Egyptian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Mohammad Idris stressed the need to adopt collective procedures regarding the fight against terrorism and illegal armed groups in Syria and to avoid being dragged behind allegations of changing the names of terrorist organizations in order to hide their real identity.

He also affirmed the need to take action against the governments that are still supporting the terrorist organizations, warning of the danger of these terrorists and foreign mercenaries whose actions are currently extending out of Syria to continue their destructive activities in other parts of the Middle East.

The Egyptian envoy expressed hope that the agreement on forming the constitutional committee on Syria will be a turning point that will end the suffering of the Syrian people.

All should speed up efforts to help the committee start work as soon as possible and with focus on elements of political settlement and on objective issues, Idris said.

He reiterated the importance of carrying out a Syrian-led political process to end the crisis in the country and called for stopping attempts by some parties to modify the demographic composition in northern Syria in order to expand their influence in the region.

He asserted that Cairo will continue to spare no effort to help reach a sustainable political settlement that preserves Syria’s sovereignty, unity and  territorial integrity.
