Foreign Minister: We will never ever accept any external intervention in the Syrian constitutional committee’s work

The Minister of Expatriates and Foreign Affairs Walid al-Muallem has made it clear that the Committee formed to discuss the Syrian constitution is one of the outcomes of the Syrian National Conference held in Sochi and there have been external pressures to hinder its make up.

In an interview with the Syria TV channel, al-Muallem asserted that the members of the committee are the decision makers, while the United Nations will be a facilitator and it will not intervene in the discussion of the “Syrian –owned and Syrian-led” constitutional committee.

“We will never ever accept any external intervention in or pressures on the work of the committee,” the minister added.

He, in addition, stressed that the liberation of every inch in Syria from terrorism is guaranteed under international law and the UN resolutions.  

“The countries involved in the attack on Syria do not want to see any progress in the work of the constitutional committee because they do not want a political solution to the ongoing war in Syria,” al-Muallem said, stressing that fighting terrorism does not contradict with going ahead with political process.

He dismissed reports being circulated about the existence of ready constitutions.

“When we feel that there is an external intervention in the work of the constitutional committee, we will announce that and we will stop discussion,” al-Muallem reiterated, pointing out that the committee’s rules are based on national principles and Syrians’ sacrifices.

“There will be serious outcomes if the other parties stop to intervene in our internal affairs,” the Foreign Minister concluded.
