Leishmaniasis in Syria

Leishmaniasis is a disease caused by parasites of the Leishmania type. It is spread by the bite of certain types of sand- flies. People get infected with this disease by three main ways: cutaneous, mucocutaneous, or visceral leishmaniasis.  The symptoms are: Skin ulcers, and fever.

At the beginning of this year, the Health directorate in Hama which recorded 12997 infections last year launched pesticide spraying campaign to combat sand flies.

In the city of Haskah, the infections reached 7700 lower than the 12000 from the previous year. The Health Director in Haskah , pointed out that Leishmaniasis is constantly decreasing as a result of, awareness and treatment measures taken by the directorate and its health centers spread throughout city and the number of health centers reached 40.
