Syria Takes part in Parliamentary Forum at the 2019 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development

NEW YORK, (ST)- A delegation from the Syrian People’s Assembly (PA) is taking part in the Parliamentary Forum at the 2019 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), which kicked off its deliberations on 13 of July and will last till July 18th at the UN headquarters in New York.

The High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) is the United Nations hub for the global review of progress toward the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The main theme of the 2019 session, held under the aegis of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), is “Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”. While assessing overall progress toward the SDGs.

The forum is held at the invitation of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

 During its sessions on Sunday and Monday, the forum discussed partnership between governments, parliaments, international organizations and Trade Unions in addition to local administrations and the private sectors. Ways of activating these partnerships towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 were discussed. The forum is an opportunity to discuss the main theme of the session and exchange experiences on SDGs.

The forum’s plenary session is due to be held on Tuesday and it will be followed by workshops to assess the readiness of parliaments to actively participate in achieving the hoped for goals.

The Syrian delegation to the Parliamentary Forum comprises, Sanaa Abou Zeid, an observer at the People’s Assembly, Ahmad Kuzbari, head of the PA Legislative and Constitutional Committee, Maha Shbero, Rapporteur of the PA Foreign and Arab Affairs Committee and MP Hamed Hassan.

Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari, Syria’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations will represent Syria at the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF).
