DAMASCUS, (ST)- Deputy Premier, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Walid al-Moallem and the UN Chief’s Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen discussed during a meeting on Wednesday in Damascus forming the committee for discussing the constitution and the mechanisms of the committee’s work.
The two sides’ viewpoints were identical regarding the fact that the constitution is a purely Syrian affair that belongs only to the Syrians and that only the Syrian people have the right to lead the process of forming the constitution pursuant to their interests and without foreign interference.
They affirmed the importance of continuous coordination to guarantee the success of the UN envoy’s mission in facilitating the Syrian-Syrian dialogue and the work of constitution committee in contribution to restoring security and stability in the entire Syrian territory and to preserving Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The talks were held in a positive and constructive atmosphere and they indicated that big progress has been achieved and that a final agreement on the committee for discussing the constitution will be reached soon.
In a statement to journalists, Pedersen said he held “good” talks al-Moallem, adding that “great progress” has been achieved in the talks about the constitution, but still, there are more points that need to be discussed.
