Syrian MP at Women Political Leaders Summit: Effective, Leading Women Means Strong, Developed Society

TOKYO, (ST)- The delegation of the Syrian People’s Assembly (PA), which participated in the Women Political Leaders Summit 2019, held between June 25th and June 27th in Japan, presented the Syrian women’s image and notable role as leaders in their society. They also stressed women aspirations to achieve more through the creation of suitable environment to empower and support them.

The Syrian delegation to the summit comprised People’s Assembly (Parliament) members: Ashwaq Abbas, as head of the delegation, in addition to MPs Amira Stivano and Farah Hamshou.

 In a statement during the summit, Head of the Syrian delegation MP Ashwaq Abbas stressed the need to spare no effort to develop societies and consolidate people’s confidence in their parliaments and governments. She added that supporting women and enhancing their abilities are one of the top priorities because women are the cornerstone of any development process, according to the Syrian News Agency SANA.

 Abbas stressed Syria’s support for women’s role and position in society. Syrian women have played effective, distinguished and leading role at all levels, pointing out that the existence of effective and leading women in any society means that this society is strong, solid and developed.

The delegation held several meetings on the sidelines of the summit including with Speaker of the Japanese Parliament and a number of Japanese MPs. Talks dealt with means of consolidating cooperation and parliamentary ties.

 More than 300 women discussed during the summit issues relating to ways of enhancing development in societies, women role as political leaders, means of empowering women in economy and entrepreneurship in addition to women role in consolidating stability in societies , mainly in issues relating to health, economy and communications with other societies.
