Security Council’s Silence over Israeli Occupation of Golan Encouraged Washington to Give Up Commitment to UNSC Resolution 497

NEW YORK, (ST)- Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Bashar Al-Jaafari  has stressed that the silence of the Security Council over the continuity of Israeli occupation of the Syrian Golan has encouraged Washington to give up commitment to international Resolution No. 497 which considers the Israeli occupation’s measures in occupied Syrian Golan as null and void.

In a Security Council session on Thursday, al-Jaafari said that “Israel” continues its occupation of Arab territories and keeps expanding settlements and committing aggressions against Syria with the purpose of raising the moral of terrorist organizations.”

“Israel” has recently intended to escalate tension by establishing a new settlement in occupied Syrian Golan named after US President Donald Trump who himself has violated Security Council resolutions though his illegal declaration on Golan in which he recognized “Israel’s sovereignty” over occupied Syrian Golan.

He pointed out that the Special Coordinator of the Middle East Peace Process Nikolai Mladinov continues to ignore the talk about the Israeli occupation violations in the occupied Syrian Golan.

Regarding Turkey, al-Jaafari said that the dreams of the head of the Turkish regime Recep Tayyib Erdogan to join the European Union has vanished, so he shifted eastward and southward in a bid to revive the Ottoman Sultanate illusions and colonialism old aspirations.

Erdogan has engaged himself in a huge terrorist scheme aiming at destroying Syria. He facilitated the passage of thousands of foreign terrorists into Syria, provided all forms of support for the terrorist groups and carried out a military aggression on Syria and occupied parts of the country’s land.

Al-Jaafari reiterated that all countries should be committed to the rules of the UN Charter which rejects any threats of using force against the territorial integrity and the political independence of any country.

Al-Jaafari affirmed Syria’s full readiness to cooperate with the UN Chief’s Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen to make his mission a success as to facilitate a Syrian-Syrian dialogue led and owned by the Syrians in order to push the political process of finding settlement in the country forward.

Any political process in Syria should take into consideration supporting the Syrian government in eliminating terrorism, ending the illegal presence of foreign troops in the Syrian territories, lifting the unilateral coercive measures and preserving Syria’s unity, sovereignty and independence, otherwise it will be unrealistic and of no horizons, al-Jaafari said.

He affirmed that some governments are exploiting the Security Council to commit unacceptable military and political acts that contradict the principles and goals of the UN Charter and consequently threaten international peace and security.
