BEIRUT, (ST) –UN envoy to Syria, Lakhdar al-Ibrahimi reiterated that solution to the crisis in Syria depends mainly on the Syrians.
“finding a solution to the crisis in Syria is based on Kofi Annan’s plan and Geneva statement,” al-Ibrahimi commented on his mission.
Brahimi held a press conference in Beirut Wednesday, in which he confirmed “in dealing with the crisis we are depending on different view points , particularly Annan’s six-point plan and UN Security Council backed-Geneva statement and the region’s majority states.”
“holding talks with all sides to stop bloodshed in Syria by the Syrians themselves as to solve their problems is our main task,” said al-Ibrahimi, asserting that the solution to the crisis lies in the hands of the Syrians with a possibility of an international support by the UN.
al-Ibrahimi made it clear that the neighboring countries are interested in solving the crisis in a bid to end the suffering of the Syrian people.
Asked about his ”truce” proposal on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, al-Ibrahimi replied “the Syrian Government response is OK; .Hence, if the opposition positively responded to the proposal, it might be a tiny step towards ceasefire only to start withdrawing heavy weapons and to halt the flow of arms from outside, as to reach a political solution to the crisis in Syria.”
