BEIRUT, (ST)- “Russia rejects military intervention, calling for intensifying regional and international efforts to help in finding a political solution to the crisis in Syria, “said the Russian President’s Special Representative to the Middle East, Deputy Foreign Minister, Mikhail Bogdanov, who is currently on a four-day official visit to Beirut.
Bogdanov’s remark was made during a meeting on Friday with Lebanese President Michel Suleiman where Bogdanov handed over to President Michel Suleiman a letter from his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
In the latter,Russia voiced support for stability in Lebanon and for Baabda Declaration which is based on non-interference in other countries’ affairs, particularly Syria.
“the only way to solve the crisis in Syria is the political option through dialogue and on the basis of the Geneva Statement, “underscored Bogdanov .
The Russian diplomat made it clear that Moscow is exerting efforts to materialize the Geneva Statement especially as regards starting dialogue between the Syrian government .
“there is an agreement between the Russian and Lebanese foreign ministries on the necessity of respecting the international principles and conventions when approaching urgent international issues,”noted Bogdanov.
Bogdanov also met Speaker of the Parliament of Lebanon Nabih Berri.
“we agree with Berri that dialogue is the only solution to all problems and crisis in the region including Syria,”said Bogdanov.
