Damascus – The geological sciences and their applications play a pivotal role in the studies of the earth, exploring its wealth and put it in the service of economic and social development.
Syrian geologists have a clear impression in the completion of a huge range of vital and strategic projects such as irrigation projects, dams, land reclamation, oil and gas extraction and mineral resources, housing and construction projects, infrastructure and vital facilities.
In view of the importance of these resources in the reconstruction phase, the Third Syrian Geological Conference discussed the latest scientific developments and benefit from the experiences of other countries in the field of geology and offer suggestions and solutions for the optimal investment of national resources through the submission of many studies and applied researches that discuss the future prospects for geology of oil, gas and water needs in the reconstruction phase and the strategy of using raw materials and modern applications to explore mineral wealth and investment and the use of raw materials of building, where 52 geological, economic and environmental work paper discussed.
The conference concluded with the important outputs of giving surface and groundwater resources the maximum attention in geological and engineering studies, developing a plan for the integrated management of these resources, evaluating and developing their sources at the water basin level and taking strict measures to protect them from waste and pollution.
The conference also focused on exploring new oil and gas fields in accordance with the map of oil and gas exploration priorities of the Ministry of Oil and Mineral Resources and putting the feasibility studies of the Syrian industrial materials available to the General Establishment of Geology into practice and use them to create new industries in addition to the implementation of the strategy of investment materials of building and local construction to dispense with the import according to the investment map set by General Organization of Geology, especially through the stages of recovery, reconstruction and sustainable development.
In a statement to SANA, geologist Samir al-Assad, Director-General of the General Establishment of Geology and Mineral Resources, said that the contribution of geologists in the housing, construction and reconstruction sector was significant, pointing to the importance of focusing on a strategic vision to sustainable development through sound planning based on integrated geological and seismic studies to be the beginning of the correct reconstruction phase.
It is noteworthy that the third Syrian geological conference held by the General Establishment of Geology entitled “The role of geology in the reconstruction phase” in cooperation with the Syrian Geological Society at the Damascus Dama Rose Hotel last week and was attended by a group of researchers, specialists and interested in oil, gas, mineral wealth, water, housing, construction, as well as those interested in seismic studies, environmental impact studies and scientific research from Syrian universities and research centers.
