Syrian Virtual University Team Wins Africa and Middle East Championship in International Collegiate Programming Contest

The Syrian Virtual University team ( Radio Active) , which participated in the International Colligate Programming Contest (ICPC) 2019, held recently in Porto city of Portugal, won the Africa and Middle East Championship in the contest. The team also ranked 21st among others representing 140 universities from all over the world.

It has been the first time since the ICPC’s launch in 1977 that a number of youths from the Arab region and Africa were able to solve 6 fairly difficult programming  problems out of 11 ones. By this result, the Syrian Virtual University team exceeded other teams from Latin America universities and competed the universities of Europe , North America and North Eurasia .

 Besides the Syrian Virtual Team ( Radio Active ), two teams from Damascus university, a team from Aleppo University, a team from Al-Baath University and a team from Higher Institution for Applied Sciences and Technology  ( HIAST) took part in the ICPC 2019.

Earlier, teams representing  140 universities from around the world took part in the two-day ICPC 2019, which kicked off  last Wednesday and included a number of programming problems that require a high capacity of logical thinking , analysis as well as algorithms in programming.

The Syrian Virtual University team ( Radio Active) , which won  the 20th Arab Collegiate Programming Contest (ACPC) 2018 held in Sharm El-Shiekh city, Egypt, has recently carried out a week long training camp in Russia within the framework of its preparations to take part in this years’ contest.

The ICPC, known as the “Battle of the Brains”, is a means to bring together the most intelligent computer programmers from all scientific establishments and universities of the world aiming at enhancing collective work and innovation, encouraging methods of developing new software, enabling students to test their capabilities under pressure and providing job and training opportunities .
