Six Syrian Teams Taking Part in the International “Battle of the Brains” in Portugal

With the participation of six Syrian teams, the International Collegiate Programming Contest ( ICPC) 2019 kicks off today in Porto city of Portugal.

Teams representing 140 universities from around the world will compete in the two-day event which includes a number of programming problems that require a high capacity of logical thinking, analysis as well as algorithms in programming.

The ICPC, known as the “Battle of the Brains”, is a means to bring together the most intelligent computer programmers from all scientific establishments and universities of the world aiming at enhancing collective work and innovation, encouraging methods of developing new software, enabling students to test their capabilities under pressure and providing job and training opportunities .

 According to Eng. Wassim Yousef ,Director of the Computer Programming Contest  CPC at the Syrian Virtual University, the Syrian teams participating in the ICPC include a team from the Syrian Virtual University, two from Damascus University, a team from Al-Baath University, a team from Aleppo University and a team from the Higher Institute of Applied Sciences and Technology (HIAST).

He said in a statement to SANA on Tuesday that each team consists of three members , who are provided with one computer and given five hours to solve about 12-15 fairly difficult programming problems in innovative ways.

Eng. Yousef underscored that the Syrian Virtual University team ( Radio Active) , which won  the 20th Arab Collegiate Programming Contest (ACPC) 2018 held in Sharm El-Shiekh city, Egypt, has recently carried out a week long training camp in Russia within the framework of its preparations to take part in the ICPC 2019 in Porto.

The programming contest ICPC  is called the “Battle of the Brains” because it is not only a technological and academic competition, rather, it has become a ground to build a more cooperative global informatics society and participants in this contest are demanded not only to solve the problems, but also to invent clever and effective ways of solution.
