Success of Any Political Process in Syria Needs International Commitment, Close Cooperation with Syrian State: Al-Jaafari
NEW YORK, (ST)- Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Bashar al-Jaafari has reaffirmed that the constitution is a sovereign Syrian issue that can e decided by the Syrians themselves without any foreign interference, urging the countries which backed terrorism in Syria to realize that they won’t achieve in politics what they couldn’t achieve through supporting terrorism.
During a Security Council session on Thursday dealing with the situation in the Middle East, al-Jaafari said “Syria is open to all initiatives that help the country emerge from the ongoing crisis and it is ready to take part in all sincere efforts aiming to reach a political solution in which only the Syrians can decide their future and options through a Syrian-led national dialogue based on the principle of preserving Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity in accordance with the International Law, the UN Charter and all the Security Council resolutions on Syria.”
He reiterated that the success of any political process in Syria necessitates working and coordinating closely with the Syrian state on all issues. It also necessitates international commitment and real political will by all to entirely eliminate terrorism, end the illegal presence of foreign troops in the Syrian territories and work to stop hampering the efforts being exerted by the Syrian government in cooperation with its allies to reach the hoped-for political solution. In this regard, al-Jaafari noted Syria’s full and continuous cooperation with UN efforts represented by the missions of the UN chief’s special envoys for Syria and stressed readiness to work and cooperate with the new UN Chief’s Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pederson.
He stressed Syria’s keenness on witnessing the formation of the Committee on discussing the constitution as soon as possible.
Al-Jaafari criticized the political hypocrisy practiced at the Security Council by some countries which dedicated all its military, media and political capabilities over the past eight years to support and invest terrorism in Syria in a flagrant violation of international resolutions.
He affirmed that it is time for all to read the situation in Syria in an objective and correct way that helps the country end the terrorist war imposed on its people instead of adopting extremist stances aiming to blackmail the Syrian government and people and to prolong the war and expand its destructive impacts on Syria and the entire world.
