Saudi Regime Is Neither Legally Nor Morally Qualified to Submit a Draft Resolution on Human Rights in Syria: al-Jaafari

NEW YORK, (ST)- Syria sees that voting in favor of the draft resolution submitted by the Saudi regime to the UN General Assembly on the situation of Human rights in Syria as an aggressive act against the country, Syria’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations Bashar al-Jaafari has affirmed, pointing out that the Israeli occupation entity’s voting in support of this draft resolution uncovers the nature and identity of this draft and confirm the Saudi-Israeli alliance.

During the 55th meeting of the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee on Monday, al-Jaafari said that the Saudi regime is not legally and morally qualified to submit such a draft resolution, because Saudi Arabia is the most dangerous and violent religious dictatorship in the world.

“The family which rules Saudi Arabia with sword and the authority of religion wants today to use oil revenues in putting political and financial pressure on the United Nations in order to undermine the principles and rules of this international body and to make it lose credibility, balance and nations’ trust.

Syria is against politicizing the human rights item and it rejects some permanent member countries’ attempts to propose draft resolutions that target certain member countries for pure political reasons, particularly in the light of the fact that the draft resolution proposed  by the Saudi regime is unbalanced and it aims at distorting facts as well as the image of the Syrian government and its legitimate institutions, al-Jaafari said.

He made it clear that representatives of the Saudi regime want members of the UN General Assembly to be their partners and false witnesses who support a resolution that calls for some “procedures” to be adopted in Syria, forgetting that such procedures have been deeply adopted in Syria for decades and even for centuries and they are relating to elections, constitution and parliament, women’s role, journalists protection and journalism freedom.

He pointed out that Saudi calls for adopting these procedures in Syria while it has had no parliament or a constitution and has held no elections since its foundation; rather it is known for oppressing the citizens, gross injustice against women, religious and ethnic minorities and foreign workers and most recently the killing and dismembering of a Saudi journalist (Jamal Khashouggi) who was a critic to the ruling family.

The senior Syrian diplomat  went on to say that what is ironic is that some countries, which are members in the illegal US-led Coalition purportedly against Daesh, have participated in submitting the draft resolution, noting that  this coalition has committed horrible crimes against innocent Syrian civilians, violated human rights, destroyed Raqqa city and killed thousands of its residents, not to mention the bombardment of bridges,  infrastructure,  oil and energy plants,  factories and private and public properties and the theft of Syria’s archaeological antiquities.

He asserted that voting in favor of the draft resolution is an aggressive act against Syria who will never hesitate to practice its sovereign rights and adopt the procedures that keep those, who submitted the draft resolution and who backed it, away from any role in Syria’s political process and reconstruction.
