Mikdad: ESCWA Plays Key Role in Warning of the Danger of Sanctions Imposed on Syria

DAMASCUS, (ST)- Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faisal al-Mikdad has warned against the disastrous impacts of the unilateral economic sanctions imposed by the West on Syria, stressing the key role that can be played by the United Nations organizations in general and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in particular, in warning of the dangers and repercussions of such sanctions not only on the Syrian people, but on the peoples of the region and the world.

 Al-Mikdad made the remarks during his meeting on Monday with Deputy Executive Secretary of ESCWA Mounir Thabet. The meeting focused on cooperation between Syria and ESCWA, especially after the signing of the framework agreement between the two sides to specify the fields in which ESCWA can provide technical support for Syria.

Mikdad affirmed that Syria has built strong relations with ESCWA and cooperated with the organization in implemented many projects in Syria before the terrorist war on the country.

Syria also is actively taking part in the commission’s activities, said al-Mikdad.

On his part, Thabet expressed ESCWA’s appreciation over Syria’s active participation in the commission’s activities and in the experts meetings.

He said that ESCWA’s framework agreement with Syria affirms the country’s importance as a member state, pointing out that ESCWA will cooperate with the rest of UN organizations operating in Syria and with concerned Syrian commissions and parties in order to implement the agreement.
