Western States’ Policy of Hypocrisy and Distortion Harmed OPCW Work

THE HAGUE-The 23rd Conference of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) kicked off in the Hague on Monday, with the participation of the Syrian Arab Republic’s delegation led by Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Dr. Fayssal Mikdad, who chairs the National Committee on Implementing Syria’s Commitments according to the Chemical Weapons Convention, SANA reported.

Since day one of the Conference, Western states have been pushing for a politicization of its activities and using the organization to push their agendas and to get ahead of the Conference’s results in a clear violation of the CWC, SANA said.

Responding to these attempts, Dr. Mikdad stressed in a speech addressed to the conference the necessity of embracing a spirit of collective responsibility for enhancing the work of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and preserving its independence and professionalism, highlighting the importance of restoring the consensual spirit governing the work of member states.

Mikdad added that the policy of hypocrisy and distortion practiced by some Western states and their allies has significantly damaged the technical nature of the organization’s work, as these countries have turned the decision-making organs in the organization into a platform for politicization and a tool for pressure and serving special agendas.
