Iran Complying with Nuclear Deal Commitments, Says IAEA’s Amano

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano has reaffirmed that Iran is in compliance with the nuclear agreement reached between the Islamic Republic and the P5+1 group of countries in 2015.

In his opening address to the IAEA’s 62nd General Conference in Vienna, Austria, on Monday, Amano said the UN nuclear agency continues to verify and monitor Iran’s implementation of its nuclear-related commitments under the nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

“Iran is implementing its nuclear-related commitments under the JCPOA,” the IAEA chief added.

He emphasized that is was “essential” that Iran continue to fully implement its commitments.

Representatives from the IAEA’s member states, including at ministerial level and above, have convened at the 62nd IAEA General Conference in Vienna to discuss key elements of the agency’s priorities in its work on the peaceful use of nuclear technologies.

The week-long annual meeting is the IAEA’s principal decision-making forum, with high-level representation from almost all 170 member states.

President of the United States Donald Trump withdrew Washington in May from the landmark Iran nuclear agreement and reintroduced the previous sanctions while imposing new ones on the Islamic Republic.

The US administration also introduced punitive measures – known as secondary sanctions — against third countries doing business with Iran.

Under the deal, Iran undertook to put limits on its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of nuclear-related sanctions.

A first round of American sanctions took effect in August, targeting Iran’s access to the US dollar, metals trading, coal, industrial software, and auto sector. A second round, forthcoming on November 4, will be targeting Iran’s oil sales and its Central Bank.

In his introductory statement to the IAEA’s Board of Governors in Vienna on September 10, Amano said Iran is living up to all its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal.

“Iran is implementing its nuclear-related commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action,” he added.

The IAEA also on August 30 reaffirmed Iran’s full compliance with its commitments under the JCPOA in the second such report after the US stopped fulfilling its side of the bargain and left the multilateral agreement in violation of international law.

In a report to its member states, the UN nuclear agency said Iran had stayed within the limits set in the nuclear deal on its enriched uranium level, its stock of enriched uranium and other items.
