Any New Provocation in Syria Would Undermine Global Security: Kosachev

Another provocation in Syria would serve to further undermine the international security architecture and legal framework, Russian upper house’s International Affairs Committee head Konstantin Kosachev told Sputnik on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the Tahrir al-Sham group (affiliated with the Jabhat Nusra terror organization, banned in Russia) was preparing a provocation in the Syrian western Idlib province to accuse the Syrian government forces of using chemical weapons against civilians, Sputnik said.

“It seems like another provocation is being prepared [in Syria] Again and again, the already unstable system of international law and international security is being destroyed,” Kosachev said.

The provocation scenario was so typical of US actions across the world that ordinary people could see the intention and the true goals behind those moves, the lawmaker suggested.

Under this scenario, a provocation is followed by an act of retaliation which subsequently results in the destabilization of the situation in a country, according to Kosachev.

This US scheme aims at undermining its opponents legitimacy, thus allowing Washington to act beyond the scope of the international legal framework, the lawmaker noted.

“Unfortunately, again and again, the United States is surrounding itself by a choir of yes-men who begin to approve and uphold [the US actions] when it is needed,” Kosachev stated.

The western states reckless actions represent a global threat, Kosachev emphasized.
