Disrespect for UNSC Counterterrorism Resolutions

Syria repeatedly declared that the ongoing crisis in it is the result of a terrorist scheme by takfiri and extremist al-Qaeda affiliated organizations to obliterate the existing coexistence, tolerance and amity among all of its citizens. The takfiri terrorists aimed at the creation of mini-islamic emirates countrywide. They do threaten all of Syria’s population and that of the neighboring countries too. Syria’s assertions to this effect went unheeded for by many in the world, particularly those who have been arming, sponsoring and training terrorists before smuggling them into Syria, where they slaughter Syrians, destroy worshipping houses, and target every form of life and civilization.

Yesterday’s Foreign and Expatriates Ministry statement came to this effect; the UN Security Council is called upon to enlist ‘al-Nusra Front in the Levant among al-Qaeda-affiliated organizations according to the UN resolutions No. 1267  issued in  1999 and No 1989 issued in 2011. The call came after a series of revelations and recordings that al-Qaeda affiliated branches in Syria are waging a ‘jihad’ to create an ‘islamic emirate’ in the Levant!

Actually, UNSC  resolutions No. 1267  issued in  1999 and No 1989 issued in 2011 have all been adopted under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter and require all States to take the following measures in connection with any individual or entity associated with Al-Qaida, as designated by the Committee: freeze without delay the funds and other financial assets or economic resources of designated individuals and entities, prevent the entry into or transit through their territories by designated individuals, and prevent the direct or indirect supply, sale and transfer from their territories or by their nationals outside their territories, or using their flag vessels or aircraft, of arms and related materiel of all types, spare parts, and technical advice, assistance, or training related to military activities, to designated individuals and entities.

The statement carried the Syrian warning against the proliferation of  terrorism in the Middle East region and outside it as the International Community has been turning blind eyes and deaf ears to the crimes perpetrated by al-Qaeda-linked Takfiri terrorist  groups and the so-called “Free Syrian Army” in Syria. The USA, Britain and France, UN Permanent Security Council members have blocked for several times the Council condemnation of terrorist attacks against the Syrians.

Such a blockage and inaction have indeed  encouraged terrorists to pursue their crimes against Syrian citizens through suicide bombings and random mortar shells targeting homes, state services establishments, hospitals, mosques and churches.  

 The statement lashed out at  the transporting sophisticated weapons by Saudi Arabia and Qatar, according to international media outlets, to terrorists, not to mention the US training of terrorists in neighboring countries. The UN has to shoulder its responsibility under the UN resolutions related to combating terrorism and the states involved in supporting terrorism in Syria should  halt violations that threaten security and stability in the region and the world as well.
