US embassy planned to topple Chavez’ government says new WikiLeaks cable

Wikileaks recent eavesdrop released by ex-ambassador to Venezuela, William Brownfield, shows a play by play action of how the US would destroy the late President Hugo Chavez’ government body. Five core objectives were named. Some of them listed were “penetrating Chavez’ political base,” “dividing Chavismo,” “protecting vital US business” and “isolating Chavez internationally”.

Organizations mentioned in the memo included the US Embassy, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Office of Transition Initiatives (OTI). Brownfield reported that the “majority” of USAID and OTI activities in Venezuela were connected with helping the embassy accomplish their 5 primary objectives.

Funding was given to the USAID to the sound of around one million dollars. Using their budget to bring together 3 thousand forums was meant to make amends with pro Chavez people and the opposition, expecting them to withdrawal from the Bolivarian part.

“Democracy Among Us”, Brownfield mentioned, was a program birthed by the OTI, which was a civil education program which hoped to get through to NGOs in impoverished areas, and was thought to have had 600 thousand plus adherents.

Upon further examination of the memo, examples of sponsored activists, and opposition groups who were encouraged to attend meetings overseas to speak their mind against Chavez’ rule were also brought to light, according toVoice of Russia, RT.

“So far, OTI has sent Venezuelan NGO leaders to Turkey, Scotland, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Chile, Uruguay, Washington and Argentina (twice) to talk about the law. Upcoming visits are planned to Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia,” it said in the report.

Even though the leak was actually produced in 2006, the information is still a goldmine of data. Still if Chavez got reelected in 2006, the OTI predicted this would only add fuel to the fire in Venezuela, according to Brownfield.
