‘Death Targets Innocent Civilians in Damascus on Mothers’ Day Eve’: al-Jaafari to International Community
NEW YORK, (ST)- It is time for all in the United Nations and the international community to rise up to the level of their responsibilities and see the reality of the Syrians’ suffering caused by the crimes of the terrorist groups, Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Bashar al-Jaafari has underscored.
In a press release on Wednesday titled ” Death Targets Innocent Civilians in Damascus on Mothers’ Day Eve”, al-Jaafari talked about the terrorist rocket attacks that targeted Kashkoul market area, al-Amara neighborhood and several other places in Damascus.
Al-Jaafari , who distributed the press release to the UN member states and to correspondents at the UN, referred to the wrong approach adopted by the UN systems and some member countries when it comes to implementing the Security Council resolutions on fighting terrorism. He said “this approach is based on double standards, politicization and falsification.”
“Over the past seven years, Damascus and other Syrian cities have been living in a daily nightmare because of the death and destruction which has been unbearably escalated recently as a result of the rockets and mortar shells fired against civilians in Damascus by the terrorist groups which are backed by certain countries, namely the United States, Britain, France, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey which shamelessly call these groups “moderate armed opposition,” said al-Jaafari.
Al-Jaafari reiterated that “this systematic behavior by representatives of these UN member states lacks the minimum level of humanitarian sense and it exposes the immoral dimension in the wrong policies of these states which ignore and distort the principles and values of international law and humanitarian international law.”
The Syrian diplomat went on to say that “while some Syrian families were looking for a space of hope yesterday by preparing for celebrating Mothers’ Day, which falls on March 21, a horrible massacre took place in Damascus as a result of the rocket and mortar attacks by the terrorists of Jabhat al-Nusra, Jaish al-Islam, Failaq al-Rahman terrorist groups in Eastern Ghouta.”
“Tens of Syrian families spent last night in hospitals looking for the corpses and body parts of their loved ones- mothers, children, brothers and fathers- or hoping that one of the family members is wounded and not died because of the rockets and shells that targeted Kashkoul, al-Amara neighborhoods and other areas in Damascus and that were fired by terrorist organizations from their positions in eastern Ghouta. The attack claimed the lives of 44 civilians and tens others are still in hospitals receiving treatment with most of them are in critical condition or have lost a body part,” al-Jaafari clarified.
“Today, after seven years of pain, millions of Syrians are seeing the United Nations as a disabled organization that doesn’t only do nothing about events in Syria but it also contributes to prolonging the crisis in Syria and the suffering of the Syrians by allowing some parties to exploit its mechanisms and commissions to serve the absurd policies of the governments that support and manage terrorism in Syria”.
