Abdollahian Blasts Arab League’s Decision on Syria

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian lashed out at the Arab League for granting Damascus’ seat to the Syrian opposition coalition outside Syria.

Amir Abdollahian made the remarks after a meeting with Arab League (AL) Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi in Cairo on Sunday, according to FNA.

Last week, the Arab League handed Syria’s seat to the opposition during a two-day summit held in the Qatari capital of Doha.

“We condemn the Arab League’s recent move to hand Syria’s seat to a small group, which does not represent the Syrian people,” Amir Abdollahian said.

“It is a wrong decision to support the Syrian opposition by supplying weapons to them because it will cause problems for the Syrian people,” he added.

The Arab leaders rushed through a declaration in Doha and granted Damascus’ seat at the Arab League to the Syrian opposition coalition.

The Arab League’s decision to grant Damascus’ seat to the Syrian opposition coalition was rejected by the Syrian government and the domestic opposition.

It legitimizes terrorist acts that are committed overtly and blatantly against the Syrians, their institutions and properties, the Al-Thawra newspaper said in a commentary.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs against Syrian police forces and border guards being reported across the country.

Hundreds of people, including members of the security forces, have been killed, when some protest rallies turned into armed clashes.

The government blames outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups for the deaths, stressing that the unrest is being orchestrated from abroad.
