Patriarch Aphrem II: WWC Statement on Syria Politicized, Lacks Accuracy and Objectivity

DAMASCUS-Patriarch of Antioch and All the East and Supreme Head of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church Mor Ignatius Aphrem II stressed that the World Council of Churches’ (WCC) statement on Syria is politicized and lacks accuracy and objectivity, underlining the need to convey the reality of the systematic terrorism Syria is facing.

In a letter sent to the WCC General Secretary, Rev. Olav Fykse Tveit, Patriarch Aphrem II said, according to SANA, that the statement issued by the WWC regarding Syria on February 26th was really shocking as it referred to civilians who were killed in the Eastern Ghouta area in Damascus, meanwhile it overlooked the martyrdom of hundreds of civilians, including many children, due to mortar and rocket shells fired from the Eastern Ghouta.

“The statement clearly shows a biased attitude towards what is happening in Syria in general and in Damascus in particular,” the statement added.

Patriarch Aphrem II affirmed that Syria’s churches have always been and will remain serving all the sons of Syria despite the daily dangers.

He concluded the letter by hoping that the unjust war against Syria would end and that security and stability would be restored to enable all Syrians to rebuild their homeland and the future of their children.
