Geneva- The Syrian Arab Republic is participating for the second time in the World Transport Conference, which started its activities in Geneva on Tuesday with the participation of 54 ministers from around the world and representatives of a number of international institutions and bodies concerned with transport sectors.
In his speech during the opening ceremony, Eng. Hammoud called for lifting the unilateral economic measures imposed on the Syrian people to alleviate their consequences on all vital sectors, including the transport sector in all areas and institutions, especially the Syrian Arab Airlines foundation and Maritime Transport, clarifying that these measures impeded communication between people inside and outside Syria.
The Minister pointed to the importance of activating the Syrian air traffic to Europe and EU to Syria, pointing out that Syria’s geographic and historical location has made it an important place in the heart of the world and thus formed a link to all transport lines and Syria is today more determined to strengthen this role and provide all the supplies and possibilities to develop the benefit to her and to other states.
He presented Syria’s vision and its role in activating global transport being Tricontinental junction and station on the Silk Road from China to Europe and vice versa any from East to West, whereas Syria forms an economic and commercial area for cargo operations and the flow of goods and commodities with many of its service centers in roads, railways, sea and air navigation. He pointing out that Syria is looking forward to activate its role through coordination with the People’s Republic of China on its initiative one belt – one way.
The Minister pointed out that the terrorist war against the Syrian people has affected the institutions and constructions of urban, economic and productive areas such as roads, bridges, railways, train stations, vehicles, airports, transport trucks of medical, relief and living materials, passages, crossings and vital bridges.
Syria is working on several measures to improve the land, sea and air transport sectors including regular maintenance of road network, railways, trains, dry harbors, fleet of cargo, Eng. Hammoud confirmed.
