Rouhani Condemns US Troops’ Illegal Presence in Syria

TEHRAN, (ST)- President Hassan Rouhani of Iran has condemned the illegal presence of American troops in Syria, stressing that it violates international laws and conventions.

During a meeting on Tuesday with Syria’s People’s Assembly  (PA) Speaker Hammouda al-Sabbagh and a number of Syrian MPs as well as the Syrian Ambassador in Tehran, Rouhani said that the new American plan represented in Washington’s announcement of creating a new “armed militia” in northeastern Syria is a conspiracy on the security and unity of the country and the entire region.

The Iranian president affirmed that the government and people of Iran will continue to back the Syrian government and people in the war on terrorism till final victory is achieved, stressing the importance of the return of displaced Syrians to their homeland and the start of reconstruction in Syria.

On his part, Sabbagh, who is in Tehran to take part in the 13th Session of the Parliamentary Union of the Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, thanked president Rouhani and the people and government of Iran for supporting Syria in its war against foreign-backed terrorism.

Sabbagh expressed hope that Iran will play a key role in reconstructing Syria like its role in fighting terrorism in the country.

On the situation in Iran, Sabbagh said the sinister hands which targeted Syria are the same hands which ignited the latest crisis in Iran, but the awareness of the Iranian people has foiled the conspiracy.

He condemned the US threats, particularly the US President Donald Trump’s recent decision on  al-Quds plus the American pressure on Iran.

On the US troops illegal presence in Syria, Sabbagh said “Syria has officially called for the withdrawal of these forces from its territories”.
