PA Speaker Meets Larijani, Shamkhani, Affirms Syria’s Determination to Continue Fight against Terrorism

TEHRAN, (ST)– Syria is focusing on fighting terrorism to restore security and stability to the country, on alleviating the suffering of the Syrian citizens because of terrorism and unjust economic siege and on achieving national reconciliation and making a success of every dialogue attempt that maintains Syria’s national principles and sovereignty,  Speaker of the People’s Assembly (PA) Hammoudeh Sabbagh has stressed.

He made the remarks during his meeting on Monday with Speaker of the Iranian Shura Council Ali Larijani.

Sabbagh, who is in Tehran to take part in the 13th Session of the Parliamentary Union of the Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, affirmed the importance of economic and trade cooperation between Syria and Iran and of eliminating all obstacle hindering boosting bilateral ties.

Larijani on his part, asserted that the Iranian leadership, government, and people will continue to support the Syrian people in various fields in order to strengthen their steadfastness and alleviate their suffering as a result of the unjust war imposed on their homeland.

Despite enemy’s attempts, the Syrian government, with the support of the Syrian people, managed to surpass difficulties, said Larijani, pointing out that other countries’ view towards events in Syria has changed and become better.

Following the meeting, Sabbagh told reporters that Syria’s participation in the 13th session of Union of Councils of Member States of Organization of Islamic Cooperation comes after the unjust and arrogant decision of US President Donald Trump to recognize Al-Quds as Israel’s capital.

The event is an opportunity to exchange views with brothers and friends from other countries on ways of confronting enemies’ conspiracies against the region, Sabbagh said, noting that Syria has been exposed to the hugest conspiracy ever, but it managed to confront this conspiracy thanks to the heroism of the Syrian army, the steadfastness of the Syrian people and the wisdom of the Syrian leadership.

The PA Speaker also met Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran Ali Shamkhani. Talks dealt with developments in Syria and the region in addition to bilateral ties.

Shamkhani stressed the importance of pursuing the political process to solve the crisis in Syria, noting the great achievements made by the Syrian Arab Army thanks to the cohesion between the Syrian government and people in the face of terrorism.

He reiterated that all attempts to keep part of the Syrian lands under the control of the terrorist organization or to occupy Syrian territories by foreign troops will be destined to failure.

The US presence in Syria without the approval of the Syrian government is illegal and it violates international law and UN Charter, Larijani affirmed.

Sabbagh, on his part, stressed Syria’s determination to continue the fight against terrorism until security and stability are restored to the entire Syrian territory and it is working  hard to achieve national reconciliations and make the political process a success and to reconstruct what the terrorist  war has destroyed.
