Syria Welcomes UN Role That Respects Countries’ Sovereignty, Independence

DAMASCUS, (ST)-The summit meeting between President Bashar Al-Assad and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Sochi was one the most important meetings as it came shortly before the tripartite summit between the Russian, Iranian and Turkish presidents which was held earlier today in the Russian city of Sochi, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faisal al-Mikdad  has stressed.

Interviewed by the Syrian TV on Wednesday, al-Mikdad said the summit between Presidents Al-Assad and Putin is a message affirming that Russia backs Syria and holds consultation with its leadership on key and sensitive issues.

On the joint declaration of the Putin-Rouhani-Erdogan Sochi summit, al-Mikdad said the declaration deals with the issue of fighting terrorism and with principles put for achieving a political process.

 Regarding the role of the United Nations in the future political process in Syria, al-Mikdad said the UN role is welcomed if it respects the UN charter which maintains the sovereignty and independence of countries and rejects interference in the internal affairs of these countries.  

“Any United Nations role played on this basis will be welcomed,” he added.  

The deputy minister went on to say that the committee for discussing the constitution during the forthcoming Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi doesn’t have an official nature, rather it is a brainstorming process and the Syrian Arab Republic discusses its constitution in accordance with the adopted constitutional mechanisms provided in its laws exactly as in parliamentary elections which are held according to a constitutional mechanism through ballot boxes.

Al-Mikdad clarified that the battle against terrorism is nearing the end and the remaining terrorists of Daesh, Jabhat al-Nusra and their affiliated terrorist groups will naturally collapse.

He urged the countries member in the illegal Washington-led coalition to withdraw from it and called on the United States to stop its operations on the Syrian territories and to withdraw its troops from Syria. He also urged the US to fight terrorism according to an internationally-recognized mechanism represented in the approval of the concerned country to such intervention.
