BAGHDAD, (ST)- Deputy Premier, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Walid al-Moallem has stressed the importance of continuous coordination between Syria and Iraq in the confrontation of challenges facing the region, urging reactivating the agreements signed between the two countries and speeding up holding the Syrian-Iraqi joint committee meeting.

Al-Moallem made the remarks in a letter he sent to the Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari conveyed by Syria’s Ambassador in Baghdad Sattam al-Jad’an during his meeting with al-Jaafari on Thursday.

A statement by the Iraqi Foreign Minister’s office said that al-Jaafari’s meeting with the Syrian ambassador dealt with ways to enhance bilateral ties to serve the interests of the peoples of the two countries.

The statement clarified that the letter conveyed al-Moallem’s condolences to the Iraqi people on the death of a number of Iraqis in the earthquake which recently hit northern Iraq.

According to the statement,  Al-Jaafari said that “Iraq has emerged victorious from its war against the gangs of Daesh terrorist organization, which is the danger threatening the entire world,” adding that “it is the right of all peoples of the world to feel proud of the victories achieved by the Iraqis in their fight against terrorism.”

Al-Jaafari stressed the need to continue cooperation and coordination between Syria and Iraq as to confront the Wahhabi thinking, urging more efforts to surpass the challenges facing the Arab region.
