Syria’s Accession to Paris Climate Agreement Approved by UN

DAMASCUS– Syria’s accession to the Paris Climate Agreement was approved on Monday by the relevant bodies of the United Nations and the Secretariat of the Convention after it has completed national procedures to accede to the agreement, according to Assistant Minister of Local Administration and Environment Wadah Qatmawi.

Syria is participating in the activities of the 23rd Conference of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (COP 23) that are held on November 6-17 in Bonn city, Germany, according to SANA.

 During the technical meetings of the Conference, the Syrian delegation affirmed that the priority should be to provide support to countries that have suffered from disasters, especially Syria, which has been subjected to an unjust terrorist war that has affected all aspects of life.

The statement of the Syrian Arab Republic will be read at a high-level meeting to be held on the 16th of this month.

Paris Climate Agreement was adopted at the end of 2015 as 169 countries have ratified it so far. It is a historical charter aimed at reducing global warming. Countries then committed to reducing rates of greenhouse gases, but today those procedures seem to be not enough.
