Sixth Round of Astana Talks Kicks off, Syrian Arab Republic Delegation Meets Iranian Delegation

ASTANA, (ST)- Within the framework of the sixth round of Astana talks on settlement in Syria, the Syrian Arab Republic delegation led by Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari met on Thursday with the Iranian delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hussein Jaberi Ansari. The two sides discussed ways of making the current Astana meeting a success.

The sixth round of Astana talks kicked off today morning.

 The Syrian delegation yesterday met separately with the Kazakh Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov and with the Russian delegation led by its head Alexander Lavrentiev. During the two meetings, the sides discussed the agenda of the 6th Astana meeting .

In a press conference, Lavrentiev announced that the current round of talks will be conclusive regarding the de-escalation zones, stressing that the Astana process will continue in order to discuss many issues that need to be resolved.

“Astana is a very important filed for agreement on several points and aspects of the crisis in Syria including the political solution and the formation of national reconciliation committee,” said Lavrentiev, pointing out that these issues will be discussed in the meetings to come.

“We all hope that our efforts exerted in Astana and before Astana will bring positive results tomorrow that will help put the basis for a further step towards peace,” Lavrintiev added.  

He went on to say that “tomorrow we will put the documents that will determine the work of the forces monitoring the de-escalation zones and their deployment,” clarifying that this issue requires precise work as it contains many details and technical points.

Lavrentiev affirmed that the presence of American forces in Syria is illegal, because it came without the request of the Syrian government.

He pointed out that the Russian delegation’s talks with the Iranian and Turkish counterparts and with the UN Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura were “constructive and fruitful and they showed confidence in achieving good results”.
