Syria Doesn’t Treat Palestinians in the Country as Refugees

DAMASCUS, (ST)- Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Fayssal al-Mikdad has stressed that Syria deals with refugees within the humanitarian framework to provide appropriate assistance and protection that ensure decent life for all.

Al-Mikdad made the remarks during a festivity held in Damascus by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Office in Syria to mark World Refugee Day.

The deputy minister said that Syria does not consider or treat the Palestinians in the country as refugees. He hoped that the Palestinians would achieve their ultimate goal in returning to Palestine and establish their independent state.

Mikdad noted that the same is applicable to the Iraqi, Somali and Sudanese brothers.

He hailed UNHCR efforts in Syria, noting the close cooperation between the two sides to provide refugees with a safe home and a decent quality of life.

In a statement to SANA, UNHCR Representative in Syria Sajjad Malik underlined the Syrian government’s generosity and kindness in dealing with refugees.

The festivity included various heritage and folkloric shows performed by participants from Arab and foreign states and an exhibition for traditional handicrafts, embroidery items, paintings and photography, in addition to playing musical pieces.

Similar festivities were held in Aleppo, Tartous and Qamishli with the participation of refugees from different nationalities.
