Australia Suspends Airstrikes over Syria after Russian Threats

SYDNEY, (ST)- The Australian government announced today that it suspended its participation in the airstrikes of the US-led Coalition. The development comes after Russia has terminated its communication channel with the United States under a memorandum for preventing incidents in Syria’s skies and warned that any flights within area of its air force group’s operation in Syria will be legitimate targets.

Australian media reports said that the Australian Air Force, which participates in the US led coalition in Syria, has confirmed that it is suspending its participation in all airstrikes over Syria due to safety concerns arising from Russia halting its Flight Safety Memorandum with the US and its allies in light of Russia’s strong condemning of the US downing of a Syrian jet in Syrian airspace.

Australia released a statement saying that “as a precautionary measure, Australian Defense Force (ADF) strike operations into Syria have temporarily ceased.

Yesterday, Russia threatened aircraft from the U.S.-led coalition in Syrian-controlled airspace and suspended a hotline intended to avoid collisions in retaliation for the U.S. military shooting down a Syrian warplane on Sunday.

The United States is leading an illegal international coalition without UN Security Council permission allegedly to fight Daesh. The coalition has committed tens of massacres against the Syrians during its alleged anti terror operations, whereas Russia is contributing to the war on terrorism in Syria under a request from the legitimate Syrian government and is cooperating with the Syrian Arab army in the battle against the takfiri terrorist organizations.

In September of 2016, Australia acknowledged that its warplanes, working within the US-led coalition, participated in the airstrikes launched by the coalition on the Syrian Arab army site in Der-Ezzour and that led to the martyrdom of scores of soldiers and helped Daesh terrorists to control the site.
