Prime Minister: Customs sector has significant income to national economy growth

Damascus – Prime Minister Imad Khamis underlined the need to set up a comprehensive plan to improve the customs sector in order to enhance its key role and significant income to the national economy, SANA reported.

Khamis remarks came during a meeting at the Directorate General of Customs on Wednesday with stress laid on the need to evaluate relevant legislations, train employees and cadres and provide necessary inspection equipment to upgrade performance.

He said that it is important that all workers should have a sense of responsibility to perform their duties, calling for identifying weak points and combating smuggling.

 Director General of Customs, Fawaz Asaad said that the sector’s revenues reached over 100 billion SYP since the beginning of this year till this month compared to 62 billion during the same period of the previous year.

He noted to the Directorate’s efforts to combating smuggling and finding electronic archiving of customs work papers and documents.

The Premier visited several offices at the Directorate and listened to an explanation of work mechanism and obstacles hindering improvement and proposals to further develop the sector.
